Charactersitics of Operational Area | YUVA CHETNA KENDRA

Yuva Chetna Kendra YCK works in almost 60 gram panchayats spread over six development blocks in three districts:

District Block Gram Panchayats
Deoria Desahi Deoria 20 Gram panchayats
  Tarkulwa 10 Gram panchayats
  Pathardeva 02 Gram panchayats
  Rudrapur 20 Gram panchayats
  Barhaj 01 Gram panchayats
Kushinagar Kasia 01 Gram panchayats
Maharajganj Ghughuli 14 Gram panchayats

These villages are a part of the area in a basin formed by rivers Rapti, Gorra, Ghaghra and Gandak. Five districts Deoria, Maharajganj, Kushinagar, Gorakhpur and Mau fall in this basin. Major interventions of the organisation are, however, focused in Deoria district, followed by Maharajganj district.

The land in the operational area can be divided into three main categories:

  • Doaba, the land falling between two major rivers Rapti and Gorra
  • Kachhar, the land near rivers Rapti, Gorra and Gandak, coming under flood due to swelling of the rivers
  • Devar, the land within the streams of river Ghaghra

Flood pattern and intensity is highly uncertain in this doaba, kachhar and devar region. In 1998 and 2001, the area witnessed devastating floods whereas in 1999 it was a mild one. But in all the instances agriculture suffered badly. In 1998 and 2001 crops were completely washed away, while in 1999 vast tracts of agricultural land remained fallow because of flood fear.

The nature of problems due to floods and water logging are of various types. They range from different depth and duration of floods, different duration of water logging and its recession, river bank erosion, sand casting, etc.
