Yuva Chetna Kendra came into existence in 1984 as a brainchild of a few young enthusiasts in Desahi Deoria village in Deoria district of eastern Uttar Pradesh. Three years later YCK got a legal status when it was registered in 1987 under the Societies Registration Act, 1860. In due course it was registered under Foreign Contribution Regulation Act, 1975, for receiving foreign funds and under Income Tax Act, 1962, for income tax exemption. YCK has a well equipped secretariat and three field offices to implement various programmes.
YCK is primarily concerned with empowerment of the powerless in the society. Over the years it has identified major problems and issues that the people in the area face:
- Food security
- Flood and water logging
- Low income among the farming community
- Low literacy levels
- Livelihood insecurity
The organisation is tackling these problems and issues through awareness generation and environment building, capacity building and convergence of approaches to provide a broader base for the solutions. Developing people's organisations in the form of self-help groups, farmers' groups and youth groups of women and men; livelihood interventions like agriculture on sandcasting, sustainable agricultural practices, income generation; and functional literacy assist in solution of these problems.
